What other information should I know about?

If you are older than 35 years of age, do not smoke while using Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Smoking can increase the risk of a stroke, heart attack, or blood clot.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a contraceptive. It will not protect you against AIDS or any other sexually transmitted disease.

Do not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you have recently given birth or if you are pregnant. This medication may cause birth defects. Do not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen until 6 months has passed since giving birth.

Do not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you have any of the following problems: a history of blood clotting or stroke, uterine or breast cancer, circulatory problems, abnormal vaginal bleeding, cancer of the liver, liver disease, migraine headaches, or jaundice caused by other oral contraceptives.

Inform your doctor of any other prescription medicines that you are taking, as well as herbal and other over-the-counter medicines, as well as vitamin supplements. This is very important because some medications can reduce the effectiveness of Ortho Tri-Cyclen and you may become pregnant.

Side effects that are not serious include: vomiting, mild nausea, breast pain, stomach cramps, swelling, darkening of the skin or freckles, hair loss, increased hair growth, change in appetite or weight, vision problems, irregular menstrual periods, vaginal discharge or itching, nervousness, fatigue, headache, or dizziness.
