How does Ortho Tri-Cyclen work?
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a combination of female hormones that prevent a woman ovulating, therefore she cannot become pregnant. Ortho Tri-Cyclen also thickens cervical mucus which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.
What is the dosage of Ortho Tri-Cyclen?
Ortho Tri-Cyclen must be taken as directed. The tablets are supplied in packs of 28. Follow the instructions on the package carefully. When first using Ortho Tri-Cyclen it is recommended that you use a second form of birth control.
Do not be alarmed if you experience some bleeding during the first 3 months of treatment. But if this continues for longer than 3 months contact your doctor.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, contact your doctor, a health care worker, or speak to your pharmacist.
What other information should I know about?
If you are older than 35 years of age, do not smoke while using Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Smoking can increase the risk of a stroke, heart attack, or blood clot.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a contraceptive. It will not protect you against AIDS or any other sexually transmitted disease.
Do not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you have recently given birth or if you are pregnant. This medication may cause birth defects. Do not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen until 6 months has passed since giving birth.
Do not use Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you have any of the following problems: a history of blood clotting or stroke, uterine or breast cancer, circulatory problems, abnormal vaginal bleeding, cancer of the liver, liver disease, migraine headaches, or jaundice caused by other oral contraceptives.
Inform your doctor of any other prescription medicines that you are taking, as well as herbal and other over-the-counter medicines, as well as vitamin supplements. This is very important because some medications can reduce the effectiveness of Ortho Tri-Cyclen and you may become pregnant.
Do not use Ortho Tri-Clycen if you are breast-feeding because is norgestimate may pass into breast milk.

Additional serious side effects may include: depression, insomnia, mood swings, jaundice, stomach pain, nausea, clay colored stools, lack of appetite, dark urine, low fever, weakness or numbness on one side of your body, sudden severe headache, vision problems, confusion, loss of balance, sweating, or swelling of the feet, hands or ankles.
Side effects that are not serious include: vomiting, mild nausea, breast pain, stomach cramps, swelling, darkening of the skin or freckles, hair loss, increased hair growth, change in appetite or weight, vision problems, irregular menstrual periods, vaginal discharge or itching, nervousness, fatigue, headache, or dizziness.
